Interior designers

Accounting software for interior designers: design fees, furnishings at markup and client deposits

Designers earn two ways: fees for design time and margin on the furnishings they buy for clients. AcboBooks logs design hours by project, holds the client's deposit for the sofa you are ordering, and bills purchases on with your markup.

For residential and commercial interior designers and decorators in the US and Canada, $399.99 once.

No card, no account. Windows 10 and 11. United States and Canada.

What it means

In practice

Design time by project

Each client is a customer and each room or home a job. Hours go into time tracking against the job and onto the invoice, hourly or as a flat fee.

Furnishings at your markup

Bills from vendors and workrooms carry the client's job and are marked billable. When you invoice, pick the costs and enter your markup percentage.

Deposits before you order

Take the client's deposit before placing a large order. It is held as a customer deposit and applied to the invoice when the pieces arrive.

See what each project really earned

Purchase orders go to the vendors, bills come in against the job, hours are logged, and the Job Profitability report shows fees, product margin and costs for each project.

Trade pricing for clients is easy too: a price level per customer marks items up or down by a percentage.

What it does not do

· No mood boards, product clipping or client portal.

· Customer deposits are applied to invoices; there is no separate deposit refund screen.

· Windows 10 and 11 for now (a Mac version is coming soon); no phone app.

· It imports your bank's statement file rather than connecting live to the bank.

Questions people ask

Before you download

Should I charge sales tax on furnishings I buy for clients?

Usually you buy for resale with a resale certificate and charge the client tax on the sale. Whether design fees are taxable varies by state and province. Set fee and product items to match.

Can I show clients my cost?

You choose. Bill costs through at cost, or apply a markup when you pull them onto the invoice. The invoice shows the billed amount.

How do I bill a flat design fee in stages?

Put the fee on an estimate, then invoice a percentage of it at each stage with progress invoicing.

Can I work on a laptop at client sites?

Yes. Install it on a Windows laptop and carry the encrypted file, or connect to the office PC over your network.
