Compare/QuickBooks Desktop alternative

QuickBooks Desktop alternative

The QuickBooks Desktop alternative that stays on your desktop

If you have run your business on QuickBooks Desktop Pro or Premier, you already know what you want: a program on your own computer, a company file you can back up and hand to your accountant, and a price you pay once. Intuit stopped selling those editions to new customers and now steers everyone to Online subscriptions or to Enterprise.

AcboBooks was built for exactly this moment. It is a Windows desktop program with the same mental model, bought once for $399.99, and it imports your QuickBooks Desktop company file: lists, open balances and transactions.

No card, no account. Windows 10 and 11. QuickBooks Desktop prices and features checked October 2026.

Why people leave

What QuickBooks Desktop users tell us, and what changes

You cannot buy Pro or Premier any more

New subscriptions ended in 2024. If you need a second copy, a new PC, or a file for a second business, there is no Desktop product to buy except Enterprise. AcboBooks is sold today, to anyone, for $399.99.

The upgrade path is a subscription

Intuit's answer is QuickBooks Online, which is rented monthly and repriced regularly, or Enterprise on an annual contract. AcboBooks is owned: pay once, keep it, renew updates only if you want them.

Online is not Desktop

Moving to Online means a browser, an Intuit account, a connection, and a different way of working. AcboBooks keeps the desktop habits: menus, lists, registers, batch entry, print cheques, close the period.

Your history is locked in a file only one program opens

A .QBW file is readable only by QuickBooks, and only while your subscription is live. AcboBooks reads it on the way in and keeps your books in a file that is yours, encrypted with your own password.

Payroll was the expensive part

Desktop payroll was a yearly add-on that rose every year. AcboBooks includes payroll: federal and state tables, W-2 and 1099, direct deposit files, and for Canada CPP, EI, T4 and T4A.

Three years

What the same three years cost

Intuit's path for a Pro or Premier user is Online Plus at $140 a month, or Enterprise on an annual subscription that runs into four figures a year. Both are rented.

QuickBooks Desktop (QuickBooks Online Plus)AcboBooks Pro
Year 1$1,680.00$399.99
Year 2$1,680.00$0.00 (updates renewal optional)
Year 3$1,680.00$0.00 (updates renewal optional)
Total$5,040.00$399.99

At QuickBooks Desktop's list price as of October 2026, before any add-ons, and assuming no price rise. AcboBooks includes 12 months of updates and support; renewing updates after that is optional and the software keeps working either way.

Being fair

Who should stay with QuickBooks Desktop

Stay on QuickBooks Desktop if your subscription is still live and you depend on Enterprise features such as advanced inventory with barcodes and multiple warehouses, or on an industry edition's specialised reports, or if your accountant insists on an Accountant's Copy workflow. AcboBooks covers the Pro and Premier job thoroughly; it is not an Enterprise replacement for a 30-user warehouse.

What AcboBooks does not do

· No phone app and no Mac version; it is a Windows desktop program.

· No live bank connection; it imports the OFX, QFX or CSV statement your bank provides.

· Card payments go through a Stripe payment link on the invoice, not a built-in processor.

Moving your books

From QuickBooks Desktop to AcboBooks

This is the move AcboBooks was designed around. Three paths, all described on the Move from QuickBooks page.

1

IIF export (any edition, any year): File → Utilities → Export → Lists to IIF, then File → Import from QuickBooks in AcboBooks. Lists and opening balances come across.

2

Live pull (QuickBooks Desktop 2019 or later, same PC): open your company file, then AcboBooks reads lists and transactions through Intuit's on-device SDK after you approve it once.

3

Fresh start with bank history: import lists, enter opening balances as of your start date, and bring in bank statements for the history you want searchable.

4

Verify: trial balance, A/R and A/P ageing, bank balances and inventory counts in both programs as of the same date. Re-running the import updates in place; it never duplicates.

Payroll history arrives as year-to-date opening balances. Memorised reports, custom templates and attachments do not come across.

Canada

QuickBooks Desktop in Canada

Canadian businesses lost Desktop earlier and harder: the Canadian editions were withdrawn and the suggested path is QuickBooks Online Canada, priced in CAD by plan. The import paths above work on Canadian files too.

AcboBooks has a Canadian edition in the same licence: CAD as the home currency, GST/HST with input tax credits and PST/QST by province, CPP, EI and provincial tax payroll, T4 and T4A slips, and Canadian cheque layouts. Choose Canada when you create the company.

Questions people ask

Leaving QuickBooks Desktop: the practical questions

Is QuickBooks Desktop really discontinued?

Intuit stopped selling new subscriptions of Desktop Pro Plus, Premier Plus and Mac Plus to US customers in 2024. Existing subscribers can renew, and Enterprise is still sold. Older versions also lose add-on services three years after release under Intuit's discontinuation policy.

Can AcboBooks open my .QBW file?

Not directly; no other program can. It imports what QuickBooks Desktop exports (IIF lists) and, on the same PC, reads lists and transactions through Intuit's own SDK while QuickBooks is open. The result is a native AcboBooks file.

Does it feel like QuickBooks Desktop?

The structure is familiar: a menu bar with Company, Lists, Customers, Vendors, Payroll, Banking, Reports and Accountant; registers; batch entry; memorised transactions; closing date with a password. Keyboard habits carry over.

How many computers can I install it on?

Two per licence, as host or as client on the office network, with record locking. Additional seats are available. Your accountant is not a seat.

What about my accountant's Accountant's Copy workflow?

AcboBooks uses a simpler exchange: you send a backup, the accountant makes adjusting entries in their copy, exports them, and you import them. They match by date, memo and amount, so nothing double-posts.

Is there a free trial?

Yes. The trial runs for 15 days with every feature, no card and no account. If you buy, nothing is re-entered; the file you were working in simply stops counting down.

What does the licence cover?

$399.99 buys AcboBooks Pro for one business on two computers, for as long as you like, with 12 months of updates and email support. After that the software keeps working; renewing updates is optional.

Is my data safe on my own computer?

Each company file is encrypted inside the database with your password (AES-256), so a copied or stolen file cannot be read. Back it up like any file; the app can do that automatically each time it closes.

Can my accountant get in?

Yes, without paying for a seat. Give them a backup copy, or add them as a user on your network, or use the accountant invite from inside the app. Their adjusting entries import back without double-posting.
