Sage 50 alternative

A Sage 50 alternative: desktop to desktop, without the subscription

Sage 50 users are desktop people. You chose a program that keeps the books on your own computer, and then watched it become a yearly subscription with payroll, support and extra users each billed on top. This page is for the business that wants to keep the desktop way of working and stop renting it.

AcboBooks is a Windows desktop program with a one-time price. Same model: a company file on your PC, now encrypted with your password. Payroll is included for both the US and Canada, multi-user runs on the office network, and your accountant gets in without a paid seat.

No card, no account. Windows 10 and 11. Sage 50 prices and features checked October 2026.

Why people leave

What Sage 50 users tell us, and what changes

The perpetual licence is gone

Sage 50 used to be bought once; it is now renewed every year and stops working when you stop paying. AcboBooks is bought once, keeps working for as long as you like, and renewing updates is optional.

A second user doubles the plan

Pro Accounting is one user; a bookkeeper or a partner means Premium. An AcboBooks licence covers two computers on the office network with unlimited user logins and record locking.

Payroll is another yearly bill

Sage payroll is a separate subscription priced by employee count. AcboBooks includes payroll: federal and state tables, W-2 and 1099, direct deposit files, and for Canada CPP, EI, T4 and T4A.

Support is behind a plan

Help depends on the tier you pay for. AcboBooks includes email support for the first twelve months, and the help centre is open to everyone.

The file only opens in Sage

A Sage 50 company file is readable only by Sage 50 with a live subscription. The AcboBooks file is encrypted with your own password and opens on any licensed copy; a backup is a copy of the file.

Three years

What the same three years cost

Sage 50 is sold only as a subscription; perpetual licences ended years ago. Pro Accounting is one user. A second user means Premium, and payroll is its own yearly subscription on any plan. Figures are approximate list prices; Sage quotes exact ones on its site.

Sage 50 (Pro Accounting, one user)AcboBooks Pro
Year 1$720.00$399.99
Year 2$720.00$0.00 (updates renewal optional)
Year 3$720.00$0.00 (updates renewal optional)
Total$2,160.00$399.99

At Sage 50's list price as of October 2026, before any add-ons, and assuming no price rise. AcboBooks includes 12 months of updates and support; renewing updates after that is optional and the software keeps working either way.

Being fair

Who should stay with Sage 50

Stay with Sage 50 if you run Quantum for a larger team with serialised inventory and assemblies, if you depend on a Sage industry add-on or a consultant who lives in Sage, or if your accountant works only in the Sage Accountant edition. AcboBooks covers the Pro and Premium job thoroughly; it is not a replacement for a 20-user Quantum site.

What AcboBooks does not do

· No phone app and no Mac version; it is a Windows desktop program.

· No live bank connection; it imports the OFX, QFX or CSV statement your bank provides.

· Card payments go through a Stripe payment link on the invoice, not a built-in processor.

Moving your books

From Sage 50 to AcboBooks

Sage 50 exports its lists and reports as spreadsheets, and AcboBooks rebuilds the chart of accounts, customers, vendors and items from them. The new books start at a date you choose, usually a month or year end.

1

In Sage 50, export the chart of accounts, customers, vendors, employees and inventory items, and print a trial balance as of your start date.

2

In AcboBooks: create the company (choose Canada or United States), then File → Import for each list; account types, terms and tax codes map automatically.

3

Enter opening balances from the trial balance, and recreate open invoices and unpaid bills so receivables and payables age correctly.

4

Import bank statements (OFX, QFX or CSV) for the history you want searchable, then compare the trial balance, ageing and bank balances in both programs.

Payroll history comes across as year-to-date opening balances; run the next pay in AcboBooks. Sage memorised reports and custom forms are rebuilt in AcboBooks' own templates.

Canada

Sage 50 Canada

Sage 50 has a separate Canadian edition (formerly Simply Accounting), also sold as a yearly subscription with payroll extra. Its exports work with the steps above.

AcboBooks' Canadian edition handles the sales tax and payroll Sage 50 Canada users rely on: GST/HST returns with input tax credits, PST and QST, CPP, EI and provincial tax, T4 and T4A, and Canadian cheque layouts, with one licence for both countries.

Questions people ask

Leaving Sage 50: the practical questions

How much does Sage 50 cost over three years?

At the approximate October 2026 list price, Pro Accounting for one user is about $60 a month billed yearly, which is roughly $2,160 over three years before payroll or a second user. AcboBooks Pro is $399.99 once, with optional update renewals after the first year.

Is this for Peachtree users too?

Yes. Sage 50 is the same product line Peachtree became, and the move is the same: export lists, import them, enter opening balances.

Does it feel like Sage 50?

It is a desktop program with a menu bar, lists, registers and reports, closing dates and an audit trail. Keyboard-driven entry, batch posting and printed cheques are all there. The layout is closer to QuickBooks Desktop than to Sage, which most people find easier.

Does it handle Canadian books?

Yes, in the same licence. Choose Canada when creating the company: CAD, GST/HST with input tax credits, PST and QST by province, CPP, EI and provincial payroll, T4 and T4A slips.

Is there a free trial?

Yes. The trial runs for 15 days with every feature, no card and no account. If you buy, nothing is re-entered; the file you were working in simply stops counting down.

What does the licence cover?

$399.99 buys AcboBooks Pro for one business on two computers, for as long as you like, with 12 months of updates and email support. After that the software keeps working; renewing updates is optional.

Is my data safe on my own computer?

Each company file is encrypted inside the database with your password (AES-256), so a copied or stolen file cannot be read. Back it up like any file; the app can do that automatically each time it closes.

Can my accountant get in?

Yes, without paying for a seat. Give them a backup copy, or add them as a user on your network, or use the accountant invite from inside the app. Their adjusting entries import back without double-posting.
