QuickBooks Online alternative

A QuickBooks Online alternative you buy once and keep

This page is for a small business that has been paying for QuickBooks Online for a while, has watched the monthly price climb, and wants its books back on its own computer without losing the features it actually uses.

AcboBooks is a Windows desktop program. You pay once, the company file lives on your PC, and it does the full job: invoices, bills, bank feeds, payroll, inventory, jobs, multi-currency, and the reports your accountant asks for.

No card, no account. Windows 10 and 11. QuickBooks Online prices and features checked October 2026.

Why people leave

What QuickBooks Online users tell us, and what changes

The price goes up, every year

Online plans are repriced regularly and the introductory discount lasts three months. A business that signed up at one price is paying a different one two years later. AcboBooks is $399.99 once; the price you pay is the price.

Inventory and jobs cost twice as much

Tracking stock or job costs means Plus at $140 a month, not Simple Start. AcboBooks includes inventory, jobs and classes in the one licence.

Payroll is another subscription

Payroll is an add-on with its own monthly fee plus a charge per employee. AcboBooks includes payroll with W-2, 1099, direct deposit files and, for Canada, T4 and T4A.

No internet, no books

A browser product needs a connection and Intuit's servers to be up. AcboBooks works fully offline; the company file is on your drive and opens without an account.

Your data is on their servers, exported on their terms

Leaving means exporting lists and reports; transaction history rarely comes out whole. With AcboBooks the file is yours from day one, encrypted with your password, and a backup is a copy.

Three years

What the same three years cost

Plus is the first plan with inventory and projects, so most product businesses land on it. Payroll is a separate monthly add-on on every plan.

QuickBooks Online (Plus)AcboBooks Pro
Year 1$1,680.00$399.99
Year 2$1,680.00$0.00 (updates renewal optional)
Year 3$1,680.00$0.00 (updates renewal optional)
Total$5,040.00$399.99

At QuickBooks Online's list price as of October 2026, before any add-ons, and assuming no price rise. AcboBooks includes 12 months of updates and support; renewing updates after that is optional and the software keeps working either way.

Being fair

Who should stay with QuickBooks Online

Stay with QuickBooks Online if you need to enter transactions from a phone, if several people work from different cities every day, if your bank only offers a live feed to Intuit, or if you run on a Mac. AcboBooks is Windows, works on your office network rather than over the internet, and imports bank statements rather than holding a live connection.

What AcboBooks does not do

· No phone app and no Mac version; it is a Windows desktop program.

· No live bank connection; it imports the OFX, QFX or CSV statement your bank provides.

· Card payments go through a Stripe payment link on the invoice, not a built-in processor.

Moving your books

From QuickBooks Online to AcboBooks

QuickBooks Online exports your lists and reports as spreadsheets. AcboBooks rebuilds the chart of accounts, customers, vendors and items from those, and you choose a start date for the new books.

1

In QuickBooks Online, export the chart of accounts, customers, vendors, products and services, and the trial balance as of your start date.

2

In AcboBooks: File → Import, pick each spreadsheet; names, terms and account types map automatically and anything unusual is flagged.

3

Enter opening balances from the trial balance, and recreate open invoices and unpaid bills so A/R and A/P age correctly.

4

Import bank statements (OFX or QFX) for the history you still want searchable, then run the trial balance in both and compare to the cent.

Payroll history comes across as year-to-date opening balances; run new payroll in AcboBooks from the next pay date.

Questions people ask

Leaving QuickBooks Online: the practical questions

How much does QuickBooks Online cost over three years?

At its October 2026 list price, the Plus plan is $140 a month, which is $5,040 over three years before payroll, and the plan has been repriced most years. AcboBooks Pro is $399.99 once, with optional update renewals after the first year.

Can I keep using QuickBooks Online while I try AcboBooks?

Yes. The trial is 15 days with every feature, and the import does not touch your QuickBooks account. Most people run the two side by side for one month-end.

Does AcboBooks have bank feeds?

It imports the OFX and QFX files every US and Canadian bank offers, and CSV statements, then matches and categorises them. It does not hold a live connection to your bank, which also means no connection to break.

Is there a phone app?

No. AcboBooks is a Windows desktop program. Invoices and reports export as PDF and can be emailed from the app.

Is there a free trial?

Yes. The trial runs for 15 days with every feature, no card and no account. If you buy, nothing is re-entered; the file you were working in simply stops counting down.

What does the licence cover?

$399.99 buys AcboBooks Pro for one business on two computers, for as long as you like, with 12 months of updates and email support. After that the software keeps working; renewing updates is optional.

Is my data safe on my own computer?

Each company file is encrypted inside the database with your password (AES-256), so a copied or stolen file cannot be read. Back it up like any file; the app can do that automatically each time it closes.

Can my accountant get in?

Yes, without paying for a seat. Give them a backup copy, or add them as a user on your network, or use the accountant invite from inside the app. Their adjusting entries import back without double-posting.
