About these templates
Each template is a proper Excel workbook, not a picture of a form. Totals, tax, balances and checks are formulas, so they update as you type. Pale yellow cells are for your entries and white cells calculate. Every file has a print layout and an Instructions sheet. Works in Microsoft Excel, and opens in Google Sheets, LibreOffice Calc and Apple Numbers.
They're written for small businesses in the US and Canada: tax lines you can rename to sales tax, GST/HST, PST or QST, a chart of accounts mapped to Schedule C and the T2125, and a mileage log with both the IRS and CRA rates.
Questions
Are these templates free?
Yes. Every template is free to download and use in your business, with no sign-up and no email address. Each file carries a small "Template from AcboBooks" line at the bottom, which you can delete.
Do they work in Google Sheets or on a Mac?
They're standard Excel workbooks (.xlsx). They work in Microsoft Excel for Windows and Mac, and open in Google Sheets, LibreOffice Calc and Apple Numbers. Formulas carry over; the drop-down lists and conditional colours work in Excel and Google Sheets.
Do the templates work for Canada and the US?
Yes. Tax lines can be renamed to sales tax, GST, HST, PST or QST; the chart of accounts maps to both the US Schedule C and the Canadian T2125; the mileage log has the 2026 IRS and CRA rates.
When should I move from spreadsheets to accounting software?
When you're retyping the same numbers in several places, when you can't tell at a glance who owes you, or when the month-end reconciliation takes more than an hour. Spreadsheets don't check that your books balance; double-entry software does.
