How it is calculated
Adding tax to a price
Each tax is the price before tax times its rate, rounded to the cent. In Ontario, $100.00 × 13% = $13.00 HST, for $113.00. In British Columbia, $100.00 gets $5.00 GST and $7.00 PST, for $112.00. No tax is charged on another tax.
Taking tax out of a total
The total is divided by 1 plus the combined rate to find the price before tax: $112.00 ÷ 1.12 = $100.00 in British Columbia. Each tax is then worked out on that price, and any rounding cent goes to the pre-tax price so the parts always add back to the total you entered.
GST/HST versus PST
GST and HST are federal and filed with the Canada Revenue Agency on one return. PST in British Columbia and Saskatchewan and RST in Manitoba are filed with the province, and QST with Revenu Québec. The calculator shows them on separate lines because they are reported separately. For the filing side, read our GST/HST filing guide and the guide to PST, QST and RST.

Zero-rated supplies are taxed at 0% and exempt supplies are not taxed at all; the provinces with their own sales tax each decide what it applies to, so an item can carry GST but not PST. Some goods have special provincial rates (British Columbia charges 10% PST on liquor, for example).

Questions
What are the GST/HST rates in 2026?
GST is 5% everywhere in Canada. Five provinces charge HST instead, which combines the GST with a provincial portion: 13% in Ontario, 14% in Nova Scotia and 15% in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island. British Columbia (7% PST), Saskatchewan (6% PST), Manitoba (7% RST) and Quebec (9.975% QST) charge their own sales tax on top of the 5% GST. Alberta and the three territories charge only the GST.
How do I take GST or HST out of a total?
Divide the total by 1 plus the combined rate, then subtract. For a $113.00 total in Ontario: 113.00 ÷ 1.13 = $100.00 before tax, so the HST is $13.00. Choose "Total with tax" in the calculator and it does this for you, keeping each tax separate.
Is QST charged on top of GST?
No. Since 2013 the Quebec sales tax is charged on the price before GST, so on $100.00 you pay $5.00 GST and $9.98 QST, for $114.98. Prince Edward Island's old PST-on-GST also ended when it moved to HST.
Which rate do I charge a customer in another province?
Generally the rate of the province where the supply is made, which for goods is usually where they are delivered. A business in Alberta shipping to Ontario charges 13% HST, not 5% GST. Provincial PST has its own registration rules for out-of-province sellers. The CRA's place-of-supply rules have the details.
Does every product have GST/HST?
No. Some supplies are zero-rated (taxable at 0%, such as basic groceries and prescription drugs, and most exports), and some are exempt (such as most residential rent, many health and educational services, and financial services). PST bases are different again: each province decides what its PST applies to. Check the item's treatment before relying on the numbers here.
Do I have to register for GST/HST?
Once your taxable sales pass $30,000 in a single calendar quarter or over four consecutive quarters, you must register (the small supplier threshold). You can register earlier to claim input tax credits on what you buy.
