Sales tax and GST/HST

Sales tax, GST/HST and PST, tracked on every sale

Set your rates once and AcboBooks charges them on invoices and receipts, tracks what you owe each tax agency, and gives you the figures for the return. Canadian companies also track input tax credits on purchases.

Built into AcboBooks, the desktop accounting program bought once for $399.99.

What it means

In practice

Every rate in one place

Tax items for each rate and agency, tax groups for combined state, county and city rates, and tax codes that mark items and customers as taxable or exempt.

The return, prepared

The sales tax liability report shows collected, adjustments and payable by agency for the period. Pay Sales Tax records the payment and clears the liability.

Canada handled

GST/HST by province, PST in British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, QST in Quebec, and input tax credits on what you buy, ready for your GST/HST return.

Tax calculated on every taxable line.

Filing day is a report, not a project

Pick the period and the agency and the numbers are there: taxable sales, exempt sales, tax collected and tax owed. Every figure opens the transactions behind it.

Adjustments for discounts, bad debts or rounding are entered once and appear on the right line.

What it does not do

· It does not look up rates by address automatically; you set the rates that apply to you.

· It does not file returns; it gives you the figures to file.

· Windows 10 and 11 for now (a Mac version is coming soon); no phone app.

· One company per file; open as many files as you have businesses.

Questions people ask

Before you download

Does it know every US sales tax rate?

No: you enter the rates you charge, usually a handful. Tax groups combine state, county and city rates into one line for the customer.

Can it file my return?

No. It prepares the figures by agency and period; you file on the agency's website or your accountant does.

How does it handle GST/HST input tax credits?

Tax paid on purchases is tracked separately as recoverable, so the GST/HST report shows tax collected, input tax credits and the net owing.

What if I sell into several states?

Create a tax item for each state you are registered in and assign it by customer. The liability report then splits by agency.
