How it is calculated

Adding tax to a price

The state rate and the local rate are added together, and the price is multiplied by that combined rate and rounded to the cent. In Texas with a 2% local rate, $100.00 × 8.25% = $8.25. The result splits the tax into the state's share and the local share, which is how most states ask you to report it.

Taking tax out of a total

The total is divided by 1 plus the combined rate to find the price before tax, and the tax is the difference. The two always add back to the total you entered.

Why the local rate matters

In 38 states, local governments add their own sales tax on top of the state's, so the same sale can carry a different rate in neighbouring towns. Only the statewide base rate is built in here; we do not quote average local rates because the rate that applies is the one at the exact address. Our guide on how to set up sales tax covers rates, agencies and filing.

Questions

Why do I have to enter a local rate?

Most states let counties, cities and special districts add their own sales tax, and the combined rate can change from one street to the next. The calculator knows each state's base rate; enter the local rate for the address where the sale takes place (usually where the goods are delivered) from your state revenue department's rate lookup.

Which states have no sales tax?

Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no statewide sales tax, and Alaska has none at the state level but lets boroughs and cities charge one. Montana and New Hampshire do tax some specific things, such as lodging and meals.

How do I work out sales tax backwards from a total?

Divide the total by 1 plus the rate. At 8.25%, a $108.25 receipt is 108.25 ÷ 1.0825 = $100.00 before tax, and the tax is $8.25. Choose "Total with tax" in the calculator to do this.

Did any states change their rate recently?

Louisiana raised its state rate from 4.45% to 5% on January 1, 2025. The Tax Foundation reports that no state changed its base rate between January and July 2026; local rates change more often, so check yours each quarter.

Do I charge sales tax on shipping and services?

It depends on the state. Some tax delivery charges and some do not, and most tax only certain services. The calculator applies the rate to whatever amount you enter, so leave out anything your state does not tax.

When do I have to collect sales tax in another state?

When you have nexus there: a physical presence, or remote sales above the state's economic nexus threshold (often $100,000 of sales a year). Each state sets its own threshold and rules.
