What it means

In practice

Deposit at signing

The deposit is held as a liability for that customer, not counted as income. When the roof is done, apply it to the invoice and collect the balance.

Materials to the roof

The supplier's bill for shingles, underlayment and flashing carries the customer:job, and so does the dumpster rental. Returned bundles come back as a vendor credit.

Crews and comp

Roofing carries some of the highest workers' comp rates. Enter each employee's rate per $100 of wages and the premium accrues with every paycheque, ready to pay from Pay Liabilities.

Storm season without losing track of the money

After a hailstorm the jobs stack up. Each roof is a job under the homeowner, with its deposit, materials and subcontracted gutter work attached.

When the insurance cheque arrives, record it as a payment on the homeowner's invoice and note the insurer in the memo.

What it does not do

· No piece-rate (per-square) pay calculation: work out the amount and add it to the paycheque as a bonus.

· No roof measurement or insurance claim tools.

· Windows 10 and 11 for now (a Mac version is coming soon); no phone app.

· It imports your bank's statement file rather than connecting live to the bank.

Questions people ask

Before you download

Where do customer deposits go?

To a customer deposits liability, not income. Apply the deposit to the invoice when the roof is finished; the invoice shows it against the total.

Can I see what each roof cost?

Yes. Tag material bills, disposal and subcontractor bills with the customer:job. Job Profitability shows income, cost and net for each job.

How is workers' comp tracked?

Each employee has a premium rate per $100 of wages. Every paycheque accrues the premium as a liability, which you pay to your insurer, state fund or provincial board.

Does it handle T5018 slips in Canada?

It totals what you paid each subcontractor for construction work so you can prepare the T5018. Whether you must file depends on how much of your income is from construction; check with the CRA or your accountant.
