AccountEdge alternative

An AccountEdge alternative: pay once instead of every month

AccountEdge keeps your company file on your own computer, but the software itself is rented: a monthly plan, a second monthly plan for payroll, and more for tax forms, direct deposit or a second user. This page is for the business that wants its books on its own PC without a bill every month.

AcboBooks is a Windows program with a one-time price. Your company file stays on your computer, encrypted with your password. Payroll, tax forms and direct deposit files are included for both the US and Canada, multi-user runs on the office network, and your accountant gets in free.

No card, no account. Windows 10 and 11. AccountEdge prices and features checked November 2026. AcboBooks is not affiliated with the makers of AccountEdge.

Why people leave

Common reasons businesses leave AccountEdge, and what changes

The software is a subscription

AccountEdge is billed every month for as long as you use it. AcboBooks is bought once for $399.99 and keeps working for as long as you like; renewing updates after the first year is optional, though payroll users need it for each year's new tax tables.

Payroll is a second monthly bill

AccountEdge Payroll is $20 a month on top of the plan, and payroll tax forms and direct deposit are add-ons at extra cost. AcboBooks includes payroll: federal and state withholding, Forms 941, 940, W-2, W-3 and 1099-NEC, direct deposit files, and for Canada CPP, EI, T4 and T4A.

A second user changes the plan

Two people working in the books means Network Edition instead of Pro. An AcboBooks licence covers two computers on the office network with unlimited user logins and record locking; more computers are $149.99 each, once.

Moving over brings only your lists

AccountEdge imports accounts, items and contacts from QuickBooks, and sends transaction history to a paid conversion service. AcboBooks brings QuickBooks Desktop and QuickBooks Online data across itself, history included.

Three years

What the same three years cost

A small business with employees needs AccountEdge Pro ($20 a month) plus AccountEdge Payroll ($20 a month), before the extra charges for payroll tax forms and direct deposit. A second user means Network Edition at $30 a month instead of Pro.

Being fair

Who should stay with AccountEdge

AcboBooks runs on Windows only. If your office works on Macs, or you need to reach the books from a browser away from the office, AcboBooks is not the right fit today.

What AcboBooks does not do

· A Windows desktop program; there is no Mac version yet and no phone app.

· No automatic bank feed for most banks; it imports the OFX, QFX or CSV statement your bank provides, and downloads directly from banks that offer OFX Direct Connect.

· Card payments go through a Stripe payment link on the invoice, not a built-in processor.

Moving your books

From AccountEdge to AcboBooks

AccountEdge exports its lists as text files, and AcboBooks rebuilds the chart of accounts, customers, vendors and items from them. The new books start at a date you choose, usually a month or year end.

1

In AccountEdge, export the accounts list, customer and vendor cards, employees and items, and print a trial balance as of your start date.

2

In AcboBooks: create the company (choose Canada or United States), then File → Import for each list.

3

Enter opening balances from the trial balance, and recreate open invoices and unpaid bills so receivables and payables age correctly.

4

Import bank statements (OFX, QFX or CSV) for the history you want searchable, then compare the trial balance, ageing and bank balances in both programs.

Payroll history comes across as year-to-date opening balances; run the next pay in AcboBooks.

Canada

For Canadian businesses

AccountEdge's published plans are priced in US dollars with US payroll.

AcboBooks has a Canadian edition in the same licence: GST/HST returns with input tax credits, PST and QST, CPP, EI and provincial tax, T4 and T4A slips, and Canadian cheque layouts.

Questions people ask

Leaving AccountEdge: the practical questions

How much does AccountEdge cost over three years?

At AccountEdge's November 2026 US prices, Pro with Payroll is $40 a month, or $1,440 over three years, before the extra charges for payroll tax forms and direct deposit. AcboBooks Pro is $399.99 once with payroll and tax forms included, and update renewals after the first year are optional.

Can I keep my books on my own computer?

Yes. AcboBooks is a Windows program and your company file lives on your PC, encrypted with your password. There is no cloud account and it works without internet; it checks the licence once a day when you are online.

Does it handle Canadian books?

Yes, in the same licence. Choose Canada when creating the company: CAD, GST/HST with input tax credits, PST and QST by province, CPP, EI and provincial payroll, T4 and T4A slips.

Is there a free trial?

Yes. The trial runs for 15 days with every feature, no card and no account. If you buy, nothing is re-entered; the file you were working in simply stops counting down.

What does the licence cover?

$399.99 buys AcboBooks Pro for one business on two computers, for as long as you like, with 12 months of updates and email support. After that the software keeps working; renewing updates is optional, though payroll users need it for each year's new tax tables.

Is my data safe on my own computer?

Each company file is encrypted inside the database with your password (AES-256), so a copied or stolen file can't be read without your password. Back it up like any file; the app can do that automatically each time it closes.

Can my accountant get in?

Yes, without paying for a seat. Give them a backup copy, or add them as a user on your network, or use the accountant invite from inside the app. Their adjusting entries import back without double-posting.
