The cost of skipping an early-payment discount
Annual cost = discount % ÷ (100 − discount %) × 365 ÷ (net days − discount days). For 2/10 net 30 that is 2 ÷ 98 × 365 ÷ 20 = 37.2% a year; for 1/10 net 30 it is 1 ÷ 99 × 365 ÷ 20 = 18.4%. That is the interest rate the customer is in effect paying by waiting.
Worked example
An invoice for $5,000 is dated Sunday, October 25, 2026, on 2/10 net 30. The discount deadline is Wednesday, November 4: the customer can pay $4,900. Otherwise $5,000 is due on Tuesday, November 24. On net 30 EOM the same invoice would be due on Monday, November 30, and on 15 MFI on Sunday, November 15 (Monday, November 16 if you move weekend dates).
Choosing your terms
- Shorter terms get you paid sooner. Net 15 or due on receipt suits small jobs and new customers; net 30 is common between businesses.
- Match how your customers pay. Large companies often pay on fixed cycles; EOM or MFI terms can line up with them.
- Put the date on the invoice, not just the terms, and say what happens if it is late. The late payment interest calculator works out the charge.
- Watch the result. The DSO calculator shows whether customers actually pay on your terms.

Questions
What does net 30 mean?
The full amount is due 30 days after the invoice date. An invoice dated October 25 on net 30 is due on November 24. Count calendar days, not business days, unless your terms say otherwise.
What does 2/10 net 30 mean?
The customer may take 2% off if they pay within 10 days of the invoice date; otherwise the full amount is due in 30 days. On a $5,000 invoice dated October 25, paying $4,900 by November 4 settles it, or $5,000 is due by November 24.
Is it worth taking a 2/10 net 30 discount?
Usually, yes. Skipping it means paying 2% to keep the money for 20 more days, which works out to about 37% a year: (2 ÷ 98) × (365 ÷ 20). Unless your cash costs more than that, pay early. For the seller, it is an expensive way to get paid sooner, so offer it with care.
What does EOM mean on an invoice?
End of month. Plain "EOM" usually means payment is due on the last day of the month the invoice is dated in. "Net 30 EOM" means 30 days after the end of that month, so an October 25 invoice is due on November 30. Because usage varies, spell out the actual due date on the invoice.
What does 15 MFI mean?
The 15th of the month following the invoice. An invoice dated any day in October is due on November 15. It suits customers who pay their bills once a month.
What if the due date falls on a weekend?
Many businesses treat the next business day as the due date. The calculator can move a Saturday or Sunday to the Monday; it does not know public holidays, so check those yourself. Whatever you decide, put the date on the invoice.
