How Sage 50 and QuickBooks Desktop compare for a small business in 2026: availability, how you pay, how they work, and a third option if you want to own your software.

Can you still buy them?
- QuickBooks Desktop: Pro Plus and Premier Plus have not been sold to new US customers since September 30, 2024, and Desktop Pro and Premier stopped being sold to new Canadian subscribers from April 2025. Existing US subscribers can renew. Enterprise is still sold.
- Sage 50: still sold in the US and Canada as Pro Accounting, Premium Accounting and Quantum Accounting, as yearly subscriptions.
If you are a new business looking for a desktop accounting program in 2026, QuickBooks Desktop Pro and Premier are simply not on the table.
How you pay
Both are subscriptions now.
- Sage 50 (US, October 2026): Pro Accounting $132.17 a month, Premium $182.50 a month and Quantum $271.17 a month for one user, with a one-year minimum. Sage 50 Desktop bundles with payroll for up to 10 employees cost $1,155 a year (Pro) and $1,654 a year (Premium). If you stop paying, Sage says your data becomes read-only.
- QuickBooks Desktop: Plus subscriptions renew yearly for existing customers, at prices Intuit does not publish and, as reported, raised again on October 1, 2026; Enterprise is priced by quote. A lapsed subscription is view-only for 12 months.
Totals depend on the number of users and on payroll, so price your own setup on each vendor's page.
How they work
- Both are installed on Windows and keep the company data on your PC or office server.
- QuickBooks Desktop uses forms that look like the paper documents (invoice, cheque, bill) and centres for customers, vendors and employees. Most US bookkeepers and accountants know it.
- Sage 50 is more traditional-accounting in feel. Its inventory is stronger than QuickBooks Pro's: assemblies and FIFO or LIFO costing on every plan, serialized tracking from Premium. Sage now leads with Sage 50 Cloud and offers the installed program as Sage 50 Desktop. It is especially common in Canada.
- Moving between them is possible but not automatic: both need lists exported and opening balances re-entered, and history is often kept in the old program for reference.
Who each one suits
- Stay on QuickBooks Desktop if your subscription is active, your accountant works in QuickBooks, and you rely on Enterprise features or Intuit's payroll and payments.
- Choose Sage 50 if your accountant prefers it, you need its inventory costing or job features, or you are in Canada and already know it.
A third option
If what you want is the desktop way of working without a subscription, AcboBooks is a Windows program for US and Canadian small businesses, bought once for $399.99, with payroll, inventory and multi-user on the office network, and it imports QuickBooks Desktop data. It does not do everything Enterprise or Sage 50 Quantum does; see the QuickBooks Desktop and Sage 50 comparison pages for the honest details.
QuickBooks® is a registered trademark of Intuit Inc. Sage and Sage 50 are trademarks of The Sage Group plc or its licensors. AcboBooks is not affiliated with either.
