Can you keep using an old version of QuickBooks Desktop?
What still works and what stops when a QuickBooks Desktop version is discontinued, why Desktop 2024 is different, and the real risks of staying on an old copy.

The short answer
An old QuickBooks Desktop version you bought outright usually keeps opening your file after Intuit discontinues it, but the connected services stop and it gets no more security updates. A subscription edition whose subscription has lapsed is different: Intuit says it becomes view-only for 12 months. See what happens to your file.
What stops at discontinuation
Under Intuit's discontinuation policy, when a version is discontinued these end:
- Live technical support
- Payroll services: tax table updates, payroll forms and e-filing
- Desktop Payments (card and cheque processing)
- Online banking and bank feeds
- Accountant's Copy file transfer
- Multi-currency exchange rate updates
- Emailing forms and reports from inside QuickBooks
- Critical security updates
The 2023 versions (Pro Plus, Premier Plus, Enterprise 23.0, Accountant and Mac Plus 2023) reached that point on May 31, 2026. The 2022 versions did a year earlier.
Desktop 2024 is different
Intuit changed its policy with version 2024: it says QuickBooks Desktop 2024 Pro Plus, Premier Plus and Enterprise will not be discontinued in May 2027, that there is no sunset deadline for this release, and that improvements now arrive as in-product updates rather than new yearly versions. If you are on 2024 with an active subscription, there is no version deadline forcing a move.
Some older articles still give a 2027 end date for Desktop 2024. Intuit's own help pages say otherwise.
The risks of staying
- Payroll: without tax table updates, withholding is calculated with last year's rates. That is the first thing to break, every January.
- Security: no security updates on software that holds your bank details and every employee's Social Security or Social Insurance number.
- Banking: no bank feeds; you are back to typing transactions or importing files by hand.
- A one-way door: the longer you wait, the more history sits in a file only that copy can read. If the PC dies and the old installer will not reactivate, the data is stranded.
A sensible plan
- Keep the old copy running while you plan, but stop running payroll in it once its tax tables are out of date.
- Back up the company file and export your history now.
- Choose the replacement and move at a clean break: the start of a month, quarter or year.
- Keep the old PC or a virtual machine with QuickBooks for looking things up until your record-keeping period ends.
