Intuit says QuickBooks Desktop 2024 has no sunset date: what support ends, and when
Intuit now says Desktop 2024 will not be discontinued in May 2027 and gets in-product updates instead of new yearly versions. What that means, and what can still end.

The short answer
If you run QuickBooks Desktop 2024 Pro Plus, Premier Plus or Enterprise with an active subscription, Intuit currently says there is no end date for your version. The old pattern, where each yearly version lost its services about three years after release, no longer applies to 2024.
If you are on 2023 or older, the deadline has already passed: the 2023 versions were discontinued after May 31, 2026.
What Intuit says about 2024
Intuit's help article on what's new in QuickBooks Desktop 2024 (last updated September 18, 2026) says that the 2024 Pro Plus, Premier Plus and Enterprise Solutions releases:
- won't be discontinued in May 2027, which is when the old three-year cycle would have ended them;
- mark a move away from the historical three-year software lifecycle;
- have no sunset deadline;
- will be kept up to date by Intuit with support, security patches, tax-law compliance and feature updates, delivered as periodic in-product updates that you accept when prompted.
A QuickBooks Team reply in Intuit's community forum on July 23, 2026 says the same. Some older articles and reseller pages still give September 30, 2027 or May 2027 as the end of Desktop 2024. Those dates came from the old policy and no longer match Intuit's own pages.
What about 2025 and 2026?
There is no separate QuickBooks Desktop 2025 or 2026 to plan around. Instead of a new yearly version, Intuit says it keeps version 24.0 current through updates. Its discontinuation policy says existing Plus and Enterprise subscribers receive version 2024 at no extra cost, and recommends upgrading to it.
So the practical question is no longer "when does my version expire?" but "am I on 2024, and is my subscription active?" You can check the version under Help → About QuickBooks.
What ends when a version is discontinued
For versions that are discontinued, Intuit's policy (updated August 5, 2026) lists what stops. For the 2023 versions, after May 31, 2026:
| Service | After discontinuation |
|---|---|
| Live technical support and critical security updates | End |
| Desktop Payroll (tax tables, forms, e-filing; Basic, Enhanced and Assisted) | Subscriptions deactivated |
| Card and cheque payment processing | Ends |
| Online banking downloads, payments and transfers | End |
| Accountant's Copy transfer service | Ends |
| Multi-currency exchange rate features | End |
| Emailing forms and reports | Ends |
| eInvoice processing, QuickBooks Workforce, contributed reports | End |
The program itself may still open the file, but payroll is the first thing that breaks: without current tax tables, every paycheck is calculated with old rates. See can you keep using an old version.
What can still end for you
No sunset date for the version does not mean nothing can change. Three things still matter:
- Your subscription. Desktop 2024 Plus is a yearly subscription. If it lapses, Intuit says the file becomes view-only for 12 months, with export allowed. See what happens to your file.
- The price. Intuit raised Desktop renewal prices on February 1, 2026 and again from October 1, 2026, according to accounting firms and the trade press. See what Desktop costs in 2026.
- Availability to new users. Pro Plus and Premier Plus have not been sold to new US customers since September 30, 2024, and Pro and Premier stopped being sold to new Canadian subscribers on April 15, 2025. If you lose your subscription, you cannot buy back in; only Enterprise is still sold.
A policy is not a contract either. Intuit changed the lifecycle once, and it can change it again. If you stay, keep a current backup and an export of your reports, and read every renewal notice.
If you want to leave anyway, the steps are the same as ever: export your history, choose a cut-over date, and bring your lists and open balances across.
